Blood testing technology fraud
Elizabeth Holmes founded Theranos in 2003, claiming its Edison device could run over 200 blood tests from a single finger-prick. She raised $945M from investors including Rupert Murdoch, the DeVos family, and Tim Draper. A 2015 Wall Street Journal investigation exposed that the technology did not work — Theranos was secretly using conventional Siemens machines. Holmes was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy in January 2022 and sentenced to 11 years in federal prison.
