Jessica Richman and Zachary Apte co-founded uBiome (YC W15), a microbiome testing startup that raised $105M from Andreessen Horowitz and 8VC. In April 2019, FBI agents raided uBiome's San Francisco offices. Investigators found uBiome had submitted fraudulent insurance claims — billing for clinical tests without proper physician orders and reusing authorization codes. The company filed for bankruptcy in September 2019. Both founders were indicted in 2021 on healthcare fraud, wire fraud, and securities fraud charges.
